Volumetric weight and dimensional weight describe the same basic concept: a pricing weight based on how much space a shipment occupies rather than only what it weighs on a scale.
Volumetric weight in centimeters and kilograms
A common metric calculation is length × width × height in centimeters divided by 5000. A 50 × 40 × 30 cm parcel has 60,000 cm³ of volume, so its volumetric weight at factor 5000 is 12 kg.
If that parcel weighs 7 kg on a scale, the 12 kg volumetric result will generally be the relevant pricing weight. If it weighs 15 kg, actual weight is greater.
What does volumetric factor 5000 mean?
Factor 5000 means each 5,000 cubic centimeters is treated as one kilogram for the calculation. A lower divisor creates a higher volumetric weight for the same parcel. Some road, postal, freight, or contracted services use another factor.
Factor 5000 versus 6000
For the same 50 × 40 × 30 cm parcel, factor 5000 produces 12.00 kg while factor 6000 produces 10.00 kg. The factors are not interchangeable choices: use the one specified for the international product, transport mode, route, or customer agreement.
Right-sizing the same shipment
Suppose the 7 kg item safely fits in a 40 × 30 × 25 cm carton after cushioning. At factor 5000, that carton produces 6.00 kg instead of 12.00 kg for the 50 × 40 × 30 cm carton. The estimated comparison therefore changes from 12 kg DIM weight to 7 kg actual weight as the greater raw value. This does not predict a price; it shows why measuring a realistic packed box matters.
